Unofficial List of Townes Van Zandt Songs Recorded and/or Performed by Others
"He (Townes) ...was very modest and very appreciative if someone else did his songs...Like this album (POET) would make him so proud. Mainly just knowing what was behind it, for them all to stop their schedules to do one of his tunes for an album like this." (Quote from Richard Skanse's interview with J. T. Van Zandt, elder son of the late great Townes Van Zandt.)

Marq's note: Although David has no commercially available recordings at this time (December 2006), he is a long-time favorite at live music events in the North Texas area and almost always seems to work in a nice cover of at least one TVZ song. Those that come to mind in this moment are "No Lonesome Tune," "If I Needed You," and "Snowing on Raton." He has also written and recorded "New Year's Day," a tribute song for Townes... Marq's review from Kitchen News:
TONY GILLIAM AND SOME OF HIS FAVORITE CATCHES/independent 2003.
Alt titles: HOOK, LINE & SINKER or YOU SHOULDA SEEN THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY!
There's always a Texas connection somewhere in the music you read about on this page, even if it's only passing through my ears. One read through the following song list and it will be obvious to most that "the" Texas connection on Tony's first and fine new homemade CD is Townes Van Zandt. Tony has good ears and a nice way of covering the sixteen big ones featured here, beginning with "The Cape" (by Guy and Susanna Clark) and continuing through "Clay Pigeons" (Blaze Foley), "The Sky Above and the Mud Below" (Tom Russell), "The Messenger" (Ray Hubbard), "Ft. Worth Blues" (Steve Earle), "If I Needed You" (Townes Van Zandt), "Pancho and Lefty" (TVZ),"Brothers" (Ken Burnett), "A Song For" (TVZ), "Nothin'" (TVZ), "Dead Flowers" (Jagger & Richards), "Don't You Take It Too Bad" (TVZ), "To Live's To Fly" (TVZ), "Only Him or Me" (TVZ), "Dublin Blues" (Guy Clark), and "Why Don't You Just Go Home?" (Greg Brown). Tracks 1-8 were recorded at Muzzie Braun's Annual Braun Brothers Reunion in Stanley, Idaho, on August 17, 2002, and engineered by Tony's friend Jack Hardy at his studio in Challis, Idaho, where Tony also makes his home when he isn't splicing wires and avoiding electroshocks. Track 9, "A Song For," was recorded in Jack's studio in 1998, and tracks 10-16 were recorded by Tony in his bunkhouse on a single mini mic/mini disc in February 2002. Jim Morrow gets thanks and credit for "putting this collection together in one place." It's a fabulous mix of songs, and I love the beautiful simplicity with which Tony sings and plays them. He's a damn good finger-picker and there's not an ounce of pretense in his voice -- either that or he's a damn good actor too. Seriously, this is good music, and you can e-mail Tony Gilliam if you want a copy.

James, Garry *Updated 1/23/2004 - Wrote to say he performs these titles:
Columbine, Dollar Bill Blues, Don't You Take It Too Bad, Waiting Around To Die, For The Sake Of the Song, If I Needed You, Lungs, My Proud Mountains, None But The Rain, Our Mother the Mountain, Pancho And Lefty, Quicksilver Daydreams Of Maria, Rex's Blues, Snowing On Raton, Tecumseh Valley, To Live's To Fly, Tower Song, White Freightliner Blues.
GARRY IS LOOKING FOR AN ARCHIVE RECORDING AND PHOTO OF HIM AND TOWNES CIRCA WINTER OF 1996 OR 1997 AT JOHNNY D'S IN SOMMERVILLE, MASS. PLEASE EMAIL HIM IF YOU CAN HELP. At 12:09 PM 1/20/2004 -0500, Garry wrote: My name is Garry James, a long time Townes fan. I had the priviledge of meeting him and Harold, sorry I can't recall Harold's last name, Edgars or something like that, anyway, Harold the friend with Townes for that tour through New England the winter of 96? or 97?, poor memory here. After the show at Keene, New Hampshire, Harold invited my brother and myself backstage to meet Townes, no doubt Harold could see that we were sincere fans, and myself a singer songwriter, have been doing Townes covers for years, I might not be too popular without them, except of course for the Lightning covers, which were the first songs I learned to play in the Mississippi delta where I grew up in the early 60's. Long story shorter, Townes graciously talked to us for about a half hour or so, he seemed to enjoy the company of a fellow southerner, he remarked that the way I said ain't was obviously genuine, and invited me to bring my 1949 D-18, Martin, to the next night's show in Boston, actually Somerville, Massachusetts, so I did of course, he had us on the guest list, we marched right on in and Townes, with incredible class introduced me as an old friend, immediately removing any jitters I may have had otherwise. I am a performer but you can imagine the excitement of playing on stage with Townes. Although Harold told me, Townes was not expecting me to sing, but had a mic set for me to play some guitar for him, I was invited up, and I went of course, We played, Going out to Denver, and a Lightning medley, I played flawless acoustic, lead stuff since I'd been playing Townes' and Lightning for years we received a standing ovation for a good 5 minutes of roaring applause, it was unforgettable, and many camera flashes nonstop flashing, I sure would like to come across just one of those pictures. You see the night before this event Harold asked the crowd not to photograph, so we did not have a camera with us. Can you possibly direct me to a photo? The club was Called Johnny D's Somerville , there was a very good sound man on the job that night and it may have even been recorded, I thought perhaps you might have some archive of shows from the New England area, he had quite a following up here, As I said I am from Mississippi however I live in western Massachusetts now still doing Townes' great songs, and some of my own, and of course, Lightnin

A note from the band:
Townes Van Zandt, 1969, "Our Mother The Mountain," a song like a feverish dusty dream of stone. "Our Mother The Mountain" was recorded by Townes Van Zandt for his 2nd album, so titled on Tomato Records. Townes died on New Year's Day 1997... The Navelgang recorded this Townes-song because it is more than just a yesterday, and maybe forever in our lungs...Will be B-side of our new single...Navel is on Townes' side or on no-one's side.

Marq's note: David's "Illegal Cargo," which compares favorably with Woody Guthrie's "Deportees," was at one time a part of the TVZ repertoire (recorded live at The Cat's Cradle - March 11, 1977). This is a truly sad and beautiful song and we can only hope that it becomes commercially available to Townes' fans at some point. Olney was one of Townes' favorite songwriters.

has resulted in several unique but so far commercially unavailable recordings. He has translated three TVZ songs into Italian:
Blues del Sanatorio (Sanitarium Blues), Libertino (Rake), and Ti Navigherò (To Live's to Fly).
